On the night of April 14, 2018, areas in Clarke County were heavily damaged by flood waters. Clarke County Sheriff Ray Norris dispatched all available deputies to aid with closing roadways and water rescues. CCSO, along with others agencies and volunteers, made multiple water recoveries of people trapped inside or on top of vehicles and residences. Sheriff Norris stated, "The most important thing is that we got to the people who needed to be rescued and everyone made it safely through the night. I am proud of the effort put forth from everyone and would like to thank all of the first responders that stayed to assist the public of Clarke County. We will have crews throughout the next few days helping with the clean up of this catastrophic event." During one recovery effort, Sheriff Norris noticed a car that had been swept away by flood waters and was submerged near the wood line of Old Highway 5. Grove Hill Assistant Chief Daniel Gibson and Fulton Police Chief Micheal Turner got on the back of Sheriff Norris's truck and as they neared the vehicle, a male subject was spotted holding onto the car to prevent being snatched away by the flood waters. Assistant Chief Gibson was able to throw a rope to the man and pull him to safety. Once inside the bed of the truck, the man lost consciousness. Assistant Chief Gibson began rendering medical attention as Sheriff Norris drove them to Grove Hill ER. Sheriff Norris adds, "I feel as if it had not been for Daniel Gibson providing medical attention to this man until we could get him to the emergency room then this man would not be with us today. Our prayers will continue to go out to all that were effected by last night's flood waters."
